Life of pi

I was reading about the mathematical constant p . Read all about it here . Simplest answer to the value of p is: When a circle's diameter is 1 unit, its circumference is p . On the history of pi - read one more interesting article . Seeing all these, origin of p could be based on shapes, especially, circle, which is one of the basic geometrical shapes. Greeks might have used to give a name to circumference of a circle as p .

Ranji Final 09/10 - A superb finale

Ranji Trophy 2009-2010 Final was an exciting one between Karnataka and Mumbai which was played in Mysore's Gangotri Gladiators. Karnataka needed 204 to win when they started play this morning (Jan 14, Sankranti day, day-4 of the match). Stadium was jam-packed with no place to sit. Around 10,000 had gathered to watch their side win. Manish Pandey and G Satish were playing well for the 4th wicket. They put on 200 runs partnership. After Manish got out scoring 144 (team score was 255), Karnatka needed 83 runs with 5 wickets remaining. Scoreboard kept moving slowly inching towards the target of 338. 18 runs were required with 2 wickets in hand. After the 9th wicket fell, Karnataka required 16 more. Then, it was "7 required" when Agarkar (Mumbai fast bowler) was bowling. Mithun and Aravind were at the crease. Aravind hit a loose shot to send out a simple catch to Agarkar and that was the end of the match :(. It was a superb game of cricket which was witnessed by a huge crowd w

Email Inbox

How many unread emails do you have in your office email inbox? In a recent management session, I was told that it is a good practice to keep 'unread' emails as less as possible (best is to keep it NIL). For the emails which just land in our box and is addressed to someone else, it was recommended to review such emails and delete. For emails which needs action, take necessary action and delete. At the start of this week, I had 1000+ unread emails in my inbox. From the past 2-3 days, I have reviewed all my unread emails. Only 5-10 out of 1000 needed my attention. Others were just 'junk' for me. Every morning, I am spending my 1-hour commute time reviewing my emails. That way, by the time I reach office, I will have sorted my action items based on emails.

Chicken and egg race is choking Indian roads

I was reading an article in today's newspaper about an ongoing Auto expo turning a big hit. 4-5 new small cars are expected to hit Indian market in 2010. Companies like Nissan, Toyota, Honda and GM and coming up with new cars specifically targeting India. My initial questions were - Who allowed them to come here? Why were they allowed to come when the whole country is choking for space? My questions suddenly lost their weight after I thought this - More vehicles means more tax and which in turn get used in improving the roads. Unless we have more 'costly' automobiles on the road, roads don't need to be good. Only when more cars come on road, people start thinking about improving the infrastructure. So, it is 'chicken and egg race'.

Will big screen die?

Are we going to see an end to the big screen theaters? Will people stop watch movies in multiplexes and switch to watching them at home in their home-theaters? When my wife and I went to a movie theater last week, I was amazed by the size of the theater which has a capacity of nearly 1000. The screens were huge and the movie was house-full. I could compare this to 'theater-drama' which were popular upto 50-60 years ago. Stage shows are no more crowd pullers. Seeing this trend, I just got a thought that wide screen cinema might soon perish. On the other side, the movie industry in itself is so huge that we can hardly think of it dying. It seems to be ever lasting. What is your take on this question? Will big screen stay for long?

3 Idiots - nice, funny movie

Image
Watched the Hindi movie, "3 Idiots" last night. It is a very funny movie talking about 3 Engineering students and how they shape their lives. Message in the movie is simple - Don't run behind success and let success run behind you. Indirectly, it means, don't try to just score marks in exams and get a job. Be practical and think what you could achieve by learning better. Movie is based on the book, "Five Point Someone", a novel by Chetan Bhagat. Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi along with Kareena Kapoor are the main cast. Boman Irani has done well as the Director of the Institute.
