Sunday Special
Sunday Special - Pani Puri
It is a rare occasion to write a blog as the event unfolds! This is one of them. Dad's Sunday Special - Pani Puri. It started with a meticulous making of 'pani' and then making fresh puris.
Dad was making this for the first time and he had to invite the God of all foodmakers - NaLa! This can be termed as 'aavaahanam'. Once he had done that he was ready to make anything just from the inner instinct and seventh sense! Why 7th? Because, first 6 have been taken up by others - First five are basic senses as we read in biology class and the sixth, taken up by Night Shyamalan; next is seventh, which I am referring to!
Pani was ready. Curtain unfolded. Drama begins. Oh wait. Why did I tell "curtain unfolded"? In our kitchen, we don't have a real door to close to avoid food-smell and fumes to spread all inside the house. So, my dad came up with a curtain which is typically a window shutter available in Walmart or any home furnishing store. Whenever we fry something, we unfold the curtain down. Coming back to the actual drama, there are only two people - one, the maker, other the taker. ha ha ha.
How much harmony is needed in this drama! How much of synchronization required! By the time the maker makes the puris, the taker has to be ready to take the bunch coming in. The taker cannot be too slow in eating because the next bunch will be ready by the maker. That "maker-taker" co-ordination was perfect. Once it was time to close the shop for the taker, it was time for maker to make some for himself and enjoy his turn. The taker at this time was out of the stage and has come backstage to write this!
In the end, it was turn to eat a few unfortunate flat puris with pani. How to eat them? Here was the trick. Put the puri into your mouth, pour the pani in (into your mouth), eat it. Overall it is same combination of pani-meeting puri. Pani puri ki jai!
